WARREN Hegg stood on the brink of his 500th first class victim at Old Trafford today, writes ANDY WILSON.

The Lancashire wicket keeper went into the Championship game against Gloucestershire with 499 dismissals in his gloves in 183 matches since his debut in 1986.

Only one Lancashire keeper has previously reached the 500 milestone - the legendary George Duckworth.

Hegg has some way to go to match Duckworth's final tally of 922 in 424 matches from 1923 to 1938. But his strike rate compares favourably with Duckworth's.

And he is on course for 1,000 victims in all cricket with more than 200 in one-day matches to go with his first class tally, which includes two for the MCC.

The 28-year-old has been in top form this season with both the gloves and the bat. He has already taken five catches in an innings twice - in the three day friendly against Yorkshire and also on Tuesday in the Benson and Hedges Cup quarter final against Gloucestershire.

And he hit a new career best 135, the fourth century of his Lancashire career, in the Championship match against Leicestershire.

Lancashire are desperate for two more victories over Gloucester in the Sunday League and especially the Championship, but today's start was delayed by heavy rain.
