A PARK is to be turned into a battle zone for Darwen Library Players' production of "The Accrington Pals."

The play by Peter Whelan, will be a promenade production through Sunnyhurst Woods, where a special "Trench" will be recreated.

Secretary Craig Smytheman who also plays the religious Arthur Boggis, explained that several areas of the Woods will be used for different scenes.

"We have been on a 'reccy' at the Woods and we will be using small areas. We are just hoping for good weather," he added.

The play, written in 1981, tells the story of the famous Accrington Pals battalion, many of whom perished in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The performances on June 27, 28 and 29, at 7.30pm marks the 80th anniversary of the Somme and there will be a special Commemorative Performance on Monday, July 1.

An indoor performance will be held at Darwen Library Theatre, on July 6.

Rehearsals are already underway - indoors at the Library Theatre. But the cast of 10 - five men and five women - still need a few props, including a tin bath.

"We are hiring the uniforms from an agency, but in one scene, someone is required to have a bath, but they do wear a pair of swimming trunks. We also need a couple of dead rabbits!" added Craig.

The audience is advised to wear stout footwear and take warm clothing. And the show will go on, even if it rains.

If the weather is fine, the cast say some insect repellent may be useful.

A bus shuttle service will run from Darwen town centre to prevent traffic congestion near the Woods.
