IN response to your Opinion on firearms control (LET, May 22), it never fails to amaze me that people like Jack Straw, David Mellor and other anti-gun lobbyists never get their facts correct.
When a gun owner applies for a firearm certificate renewal, they must:
Prove that they are members of a gun club by showing their current membership card.
Prove that they have good reason to possess each firearm specified on their certificate.
State where each specified firearm is used and for what reason.
Supply a letter of reference from a solicitor, doctor or any person of standing regarding the applicant's suitability.
If these conditions are not adhered to, the police will not issue a renewal certificate.
Only a few weeks ago, a person poured petrol through a letterbox and slaughtered four children and almost killed their parents. Should we ban petrol?
Get it right, Jack - people kill people, with whatever comes to hand.
