VOLUNTEER bobbies have been praised by Lancashire's top police officer for their service to the community.
Chief Constable Pauline Clare was speaking at an awards ceremony to mark the long service achievements of 19 members of the county's Special Constabulary.
Around 600 Specials currently offer their services free of charge to help and assist Lancashire's full-time police.
Among the officers presented with medals for clocking up at least nine years' service were Alan Dawson and Barry Spencer from Blackburn, Graeme Lund from Burnley, Cheryl McDermott from Accrington and Ann Marie Richards from Colne.
Stephen Johnson, a former Special from Blackburn, also received a medal in recognition of his service.
Mrs Clare said the Specials were a vital link between the public and regular officers.
She added: "I can not think of any greater voluntary contribution to the community than being a member of the Special Constabulary."
The presentation was the last official function attended by the head of Lancashire Special Constabulary, Brian Wilkinson, before his retirement today.
The Chief Constable also presented certificates of appreciation to businesses, organisations and individuals who have helped the Specials during the last year.
Mrs Clare said: "We have had tremendous support in the community and I am grateful for the practical help given by everybody."
