A FORMER organist at York Minster has been installed as the new Archdeacon of Blackburn.
The Venerable Dr John Marsh was welcomed to the cathedral by the Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev Alan Chesters.
He will be responsible for overseeing the financial, building and legal aspects of the Church of England in the whole of the county south of the Ribble.
Dr Marsh was born in Bromley, Kent, studied music at York University and was assistant organist at the Minster from 1967.
He was ordained in 1979 and was a curate in Sheffield before becoming vicar of South Ossett.
"I see my role as encouraging the mission and ministry of the Church," he said.
"This includes not only finance and buildings but also pastoral matters where appropriate.
"I want to support the clergy and church members as they reach out into their local communities."
