I WOULD like to warn people that the 'Gestapo' have arrived in Blackburn in the uniform of the traffic warden.

Ten days ago while collecting a prescription for an 84-year-old invalid from the chemist shop on Mosley Street, near to the Infirmary, I was parked in a deserted road for four minutes. When I came out, the warden was fixing the penalty on the windscreen.

The car displayed the invalid badge, and along with the chemist, I pointed out the reason for my parking in a limited permit zone. I admit I expressed my viewpoint quite strongly.

The warden merely pulled his peaked hat further over his eyes, and I detected a glint of pleasure.

I said I understand the parking restrictions were to prevent long-term parking at the Infirmary, thus causing inconvenience for local residents.

The chemist pointed out that some wardens would inquire at the shop if anyone was the owner of a parked car before a penalty was fixed, but this warden was unmoved!

My appeal was refused by the Chief Inspector's office, and they will be pleased to know that an 84-year-old invalid lady has agreed to pay the fine. But even worse this has caused her great hurt over something that only the 'Gestapo' attitude could invoke.

K PADGETT, Exeter Street, Blackburn.
