CARTOON bears and a huge pirate tableau are just a few of the new designs being introduced to this year's Illuminations.
Several sections of the six-mile stretch of lights will have a whole new look - and Fylde folk are being given a sneak preview at a special open day next Thursday (June 20).
New displays to look out for include Bicci Bears, courtesy of Blackpool artist Patricia Bickerdike who for the past three years has been designing the cuddly characters in various costumes.
They were spotted during an exhibition at Central Library by Illuminations staff who felt they would be ideal for this year's display.
Patricia commented: "I think they will appeal to people because they are very bright."
Also new is a giant 150ft-long pirate ship tableau which will take pride of place on North Shore cliffs.
The display will feature various animated characters which will be brought to life with moving parts.
There is also a section of witches and ghosts' lights with a Halloween theme at the north end of town, while neon mesh lights are planned for an area of the cliffs.
Fylde folk can catch a glimpse of these and old favourites - as well as find out how they are put together - on June 20 at the Rigby Road Illuminations depot.
Free conducted tours will be given between 9.30am and 8.30pm when visitors will be shown the many stages involved in making the displays.
Illuminations manager Keith Hall said: "We have already had quite a lot of interest from schools but anyone is welcome to come along on the day.
"It is an ideal chance for the ratepayers, whose money goes towards the Lights, to find out exactly what's involved."
