LICENSEES Mavis and Jim Ashton have made a head start in their charity fund-raising efforts by hosting a sponsored head shave.
The couple, who run the Victoria on Atherton Road, Hindley Green, helped raise £850, the money split between Christie Hospital Cancer Appeal and Wigan Hospice's Macmillan Nurses.
Ten customers had their heads shaved at the pub by the couple's daughter, Sharon, who is a hairdresser.
"One of our customers, Susan Stahey, suffers from cancer," said Mavis. "When she began to lose her hair through chemotherapy she decided to shave it all off.
"A few of the customers said they would also have their heads shaved as well, and the idea of a sponsored head shave developed from there.
"We all thought it was a great idea for a worthwhile cause."
Mavis is pictured cutting the hair of customer Norman Lomax, who is holding the cheque with Susan.
