AN appeal has gone out for Accrington Pals mementoes to go on display at a commemorative exhibition.
July 1 will be the 80th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme when The Pals suffered heavy losses.
In less than 20 minutes, 235 of the 700 who advanced across 300 yards of no man's land were killed and 350 wounded.
By the end of World War One, 850 Pals had died, 320 of them with no known grave.
To mark the anniversary Hyndburn Council's leisure services department and Accrington Library are staging a special Pals Exhibition on July 1 in Accrington Town Hall, opened by the Mayor, Coun Mirza Yousaf.
The display will include photos from The Pals Collection at Accrington Library, a special Pals Project by pupils from Benjamin Hargreaves Junior School and a mock trench.
On a wider theme of the First World War, there will also be an exhibition featuring war memorials from the Imperial War Museum in London.
The council is also on the lookout for any Pals items which local people may still have and would be willing to loan.
Anyone with items or wanting information can contact Helene Heyes on 380295, or Bernard Scully on 380294.
