FATHER Christmas has been handed an unexpected summertime present.
Tyldesley Rotary Club's leading light Reg Hignett is now an MBE. The 54-year-old, who for 12 years donned Santa's outfit to ride the Yuletide sleigh bringing Christmas cheer to thousands, was recognized in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
Father-of-two and grandfather Reg (pictured), of Hough Lane, Tyldesley, has been honoured for his outstanding service to the local community - working closely on projects involving young and old.
He said: "News of the honour came as a complete surprise, but I am absolutely delighted."
He has lived in Tyldesley for the past 35 years but spent his early years in Lower Broughton, Salford.
He served an electrician's apprenticeship and, after working for Hawker Siddeley, went on to form his own electrical engineering company.
He is a former Little Hulton youth leader and ex-chorister at St Peter's, Swinton - the church where he and his wife, Val, married in 1963.
At one time heavily involved with junior football, he founded Tyldesley side Sherwood Rangers and was a founder member of Worsley and District Junior Football League.
He also helped form Worsley & District Riding Club, organising and judging showjumping events.
During his 16 years with Tyldesley Rotary Club Reg has been involved in many community projects and held top positions within the branch, including the roles of president and community service chairman.
