DANGEROUS alcoholic spirits which taste of cola or lemonade are being targeted by health bosses in a campaign to protect children in Lancaster from the dangers of drink. Alco-pop such as Lemon lips, Blackcurrant Blitz or Mrs Pucker's Citrus Brew which are just as strong as a double whisky or a can of lager represent a growing wave of fun alcoholic drinks to to hit the pubs and clubs. Members of Lancaster Priority Services NHS Trust have sent out letters to primary schools warning teachers and about the dangers of alcohol abuse.
Avril Haydock of the community alcohol team said: "The bitter taste of alcohol is disguised by sugar and this combination means that the drinks are attractive and palatable to children."
Research by health bosses has shown that many children are familiar with these drinks.
Shop owners and and off-licences proprietors are being called on to take part in a seminar to highlight the campaign which is the first of its kind in Lancashire.
Health promotion officer Cathy Wynne said: "I am worried that adults may be giving children these drinks without realising they contain high amounts of alcohol. I am very concerned at the considerable risk to children."
At Dallas Road county primary school in Lancaster teachers are organising a special health week to tackle such problems.
Head teacher Steve Belbin said: "Our school is keen to raise awareness about the alcoholic content of these drinks. Children are very vulnerable to the pull of advertisements.
"These drinks are very attractive in terms of packaging and colour. Schools, parents and the community must work together to pass on the message about the potential hazard to their health."
