SCHOOL governors in East Lancashire are being urged not to break the law by refusing to submit test results for primary school league tables.

The Lancashire Association of School Governing Bodies is advising members not to respond to some head teachers' calls to refuse to take part in the controversial tables system.

The Government has announced that performance tables for Key Stage Two will be published from next year.

The move led to calls from some unions and head teachers to boycott the scheme.

Some schools in Lancashire have already threatened not to submit their results.

A spokesman for LASGB said: "The association is further concerned that the methods employed by teacher professional bodies could call into question the central and crucial relationship between heads and their governing bodies in ways that have genuine, if unintended, potential for dividing loyalties and undermining confidences.

"Member governing bodies are requested to contact the association before responding to any requests from head teachers to consider the matter, so that a common and collective way forward can be determined."
