LANCASHIRE police today closed ranks with Scotland Yard over allegations that a blunder had left IRA terrorist Patrick Magee free to commit the Brighton bomb outrage.

A year before Magee carried out the Grand Hotel bombing he and another IRA man slipped through a police net in Blackpool.

An undercover police surveillance operation by Lancashire special branch followed the terrorist but he escaped after a car chase.
