TAXI operators in Pendle could soon be off the road if spot checks on their vehicles reveal major faults.
Councillor are expected to give their backing to formal spot checks by staff trying to enforce standards of safety and general roadworthiness.
The new move will ensure that every private hire vehicle will be seen once a year.
The system was drawn up following the reaction from taxi drivers and operators after random tests on their vehicles earlier this year.
Currently in Pendle there are 26 operators, 105 private hire vehicles and 66 hackney carriages.
If the scheme goes ahead operators will be picked at random, at the rate of one every two weeks, to have all their cars inspected.
The check will include a visual examination of steering, tyres, lights and seatbelts.
If major defects are found, such as in the steering or a loose battery, the operator's licence will be suspended and not reissued until the work has been carried out.
It will also be suspended if minor defects, such as worn tyres or a side light not working, are not put right within 28 days.
Staff carrying out the tests will be able to insist on more detailed examinations if they feel it is warranted.
The new spot checks will run alongside existing powers staff can use against unsatisfactory vehicles discovered at any time during the year.
