A TEENAGER who suffered serious head injuries when a car he was travelling in smashed into a lamp post has died.
Christopher Eatough, 17, of Cockermouth Close, Blackburn, was cut free from the wreckage of an MG Maestro after it careered out of control on Aqueduct Road, Blackburn, at 9pm on Wednesday.
The car was being driven by his 16-year-old friend Colin Hargreaves, also of Cockermouth Close.
Police have confirmed that the car was not stolen but have launched an investigation into the smash.
Despite being critically ill, Christopher remained conscious while fire crews released him from the vehicle.
He was taken to the intensive care unit at Blackburn Infirmary but died overnight.
The accident occurred as the car rounded the bend from Bolton Road at Ewood and slid sideways into the lamppost underneath the aqueduct.
The driver managed to get out of the car but Christopher was trapped after the passenger door took the weight of the impact.
Firefighters had to remove the roof and side of the vehicle to allow ambulance crews to reach him.
