IN reply to Mr and Mrs P C Massey (Letters, June 17), may I point out that nearly all target handguns are of the autoloading type; the others are revolvers.

Secondly, there is no such thing as a gun licence any more. There are firearm certificates and shotgun certificates.

On the former, each weapon is approved (or rejected) separately by the police. Also, in the case of target weapons, conditions are placed on the certificate as to where these weapons can be used.

Like everyone else, I was horrified by the Dunblane massacre, but no amount of legislation can take into account the actions of a maniac.

Putting more restrictions on authorised firearm and gun owners would do nothing at all to reduce the amount of illegal weapons in criminal hands.
