MANY older persons are missing out on Attendance Allowance, the benefit which can be claimed by sick or disabled people.
You can claim if you need help with such things as dressing, washing, taking medicine or bathing. You also might qualify if you need someone to keep an eye on you in case you hurt yourself. For example, because you are prone to falls or have a serious medical condition such as a heart problem.
The benefit can be claimed by anyone as it is not based on your income, savings, or national insurance contributions paid.
Counsel and Care, which is a national advice agency for older people, has produced a fact sheet which explains who can claim and how to claim. It is available free of charge if you send a SAE (29p if possible) to the address below.
DANIELLE JACKSON, Fact Sheet 11, Counsel and Cre, Twyman House, 16 Bonny Street, London. NW1 9PG.
