I am infuriated and saddened by the discovery that an important piece of Nelson's history could soon be lost to us.
The Irish League Club on Walton Street is one of the oldest in Nelson, with a colourful history over the years. Founders of the Welfare State and even future prime ministers have enjoyed its hospitality in days gone by.
I, like many who live in my ward, have always enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the Irish League, where all are welcome, and do not wish to see such an historically-rich place close its doors forever.
There is a general meeting at the club on Sunday, at 11.30am, and it really will be "make-or-break" time.
A large attendance by all who wish to save the Irish League is vital.
COUN TONY LEATHER, (Bradley Ward), Charles Street, Nelson.
