A FOUR-YEAR-old girl is fighting for her life after being knocked down on the pavement by a teenage cyclist riding a bike which was said to have no brakes.

Kirsty Fisher, of Flimby Close, Blackburn, is "poorly but stable" in intensive care at Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, after the accident at the junction of Levens Close and Fishmoor Drive on Tuesday evening.

"We were just walking across the road, onto the pavement and up the slope when the cyclist came zooming round the corner and onto the

grass," said her mother, Marilyn, who was with her.

"Kirsty was knocked down either by the pedal or his foot and she banged her head badly. He stopped to see if she was all right and she seemed to be fine until she started being sick a few minutes later.

"Her eyes rolled to the top of her head and I thought she was having a fit.

"I thought I had better get her to hospital. She had a fit when she was about 18 months old."

Marilyn said she was very proud of her nine-year-old son, Mark, for going to get help and calling an ambulance.

Kirsty was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary but was later transferred to Pendlebury.

Neighbours and relatives have rallied round but Marilyn is having trouble visiting the hospital because of a lack of transport.

Kirsty's father, Michael, who does not live with them, is also trying to visit.

Angela Walker, Kirsty's aunt, who lives in nearby Peel Close said her husband, Alan, was chairman of the neighbourhood watch scheme and the tenant's association.

He had been campaigning for cyclists to stay on the roads and for No Cycling signs on the estate for years.
