CONSUMERS and traders in the Hyndburn and Blackburn area are being warned to look out for potentially lethal Russian vodka and illicit whisky which can lead to blindness.
Trading standards officers are asking the public to be vigilant about a fake Russian vodka which tests have shown contains higher than normal amounts of methyl alcohol.
The product, known as Sojuzplodo Import from Moscow, comes in a 70 centilitre glass bottle with gold coloured screw top and a blue and white label featuring a hammer and sickle.
Chief Trading Standards Officer Jim Potts said: "I would urge people not to touch a drop. This is a potentially lethal drink containing industrial alcohol which causes blindness.
"There's been a big problem in Russia with bootlegging and vodka's become a designer drink over here - that's a recipe for disaster."
Tests revealed 1.3 per cent methyl alcohol in the fake drink. Genuine vodka should only have a trace.
Officers are also concerned the blue and white halves on the label might attract Rovers fans.
"Sojuzplodo is just the type of drink that could attract Blackburn Rovers supporters," added Mr Potts. "It could have a novelty value because of its colours, but it will knock the colour out of anyone who drinks it."
The public are also being urged to be aware of counterfeit whisky. The Royal Game Finest brand has just emerged on the market and has been found to contain methylated spirits which also causes blindness.
Mr Potts added: "If anyone discovers either drink on sale call the Trading Standards office on 01772 263771."
