HYNDBURN MP Greg Pope has called on the Home Office to prevent the spread of the extremist group Ku Klux Klan.

Mr Pope raised the issue in a Commons debate after a Sunday tabloid newspaper article described how the racist society from America was trying to attract youngsters in England to join new branches.

During the debate Mr Pope - whose constituency has an ethnic minority population of 4.95 per cent - urged Home Secretary Michael Howard to work with the USA Attorney General to stop the KKK spreading in England.

Mr Pope said: "The KKK is a racist and terrorist organisation and no one wants to see that kind of odious society infiltrating Lancashire.

"Accrington has quite a sizeable Asian population and it would be terrible to see the KKK set up here. Its presence in England should be nipped in the bud immediately."
