A DREAM came true for crown green star Barry Simm on Saturday night.

For he clinched the St Helens Star Masters title with a display of all that's best in the sport.

And afterwards he beamed: "I'm delighted. I desperately wanted to win this."

The victory was the reward for dogged determination. For North Ashton Village Club player Barry has been in the last eight of the competition for five of the six years it has been in existence.

From the moment he stepped on to the green at the Gerard Arms he looked in super form.

He disposed of Greenalls' Roy Anders 21-7, before removing Southport's John Berry 21-13.

The final brought 34-year-old Barry up against Rainford's Graham Glover, who had previously beaten Alan Heaton (British Plate) and the impressive Mark Dillon, from Burnley.

And with conditions deteriorating Barry maintained his nerve and form to collect the trophy and £400 winner's cheque.
