AN animal lover has appealed to anglers not to discard hazardous fishing lines - a potential deathtrap for wildlife.

Mrs June Eddleston made the appeal after a second cygnet became entangled in fishing line on the canal at Rishton in less than a week.

She said: "The line was in its mouth, around its neck, wing and leg and the hook was stuck in its leg."

She and her husband, Derek, helped by Livesey Street neighbour Dave Dalton, managed to get the cygnet to the bank and free it.

Mrs Eddleston said: "It really did squawk when the hook was taken out "

She added: "I couldn't believe it had happened again. It was the smallest of the four cygnets, not the same one as before.

"People should be careful with their fishing lines. They are cutting them off and just leaving them."
