A BUS war has broken out between neighbouring municipal bus companies.
There were angry confrontations between busmen yesterday when Rossendale Transport started running buses at the same time as Hyndburn Transport on the Accrington to Bacup route.
Accusations and counter accusations flew of drivers cutting each other up and rival buses blocking the stand at Accrington bus station.
Mr Andrew Gill, managing director of up-for-sale Hyndburn Transport, attacked the move as an "act of aggression."
But Rossendale Transport said they were protecting their commercial interests on the route in view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of Hyndburn Transport. Rossendale Transport operations director, Mr Barry Drelincourt, said: "If there is a warning it's not a warning against Hyndburn Transport.
"It's a warning to other companies it is our route.
Rossendale, Hyndburn and Greater Manchester Buses North have operated a combined service on the route for many years. Rossendale managing director Mr Leonard Green said: "The current uncertain future of Hyndburn Transport and recent Press comment has created doubts in the minds of the general public about the future of specific journeys they operate on this route.
"The action taken will restore public confidence that the bus they normally use will continue to run."
Council-owned Hyndburn Transport retaliated immediately by putting in extra journeys.
Mr Gill said: "We see it as an aggressive act and our response will be appropriate.
"After working together for many years Rossendale Transport informed us in writing yesterday morning they intended to put in extra buses to run on all our times."
Mr Drelincourt said Rossendale held the registration for all journeys between Bacup and Accrington and had a legal obligation to maintain a 10-minute service.
TGWU branch secretary John Hornsby said: "It was mayhem on the bus station with so many buses battling for passengers.
"Each company has accused the other that their drivers are generally acting in a dangerous manner.
"Its sad for everybody."
