WALT Meadows (Letters, July 18) made my blood boil.

When the politicians - of all flavours - wanted a pay rise, they voted for it themselves. The workers at Liverpool Docks, the firemen, and the postal workers do not have the option to vote themselves a 26 per cent pay rise. For the years that the Government has been in power, they have suggested that any pay increases should be matched by increases in productivity.

The politicians' productivity should be measured against by how much they have improved the life of those at the bottom of the ladder.

The recent increase in postal charges is not brought about by any increase needed to pay the Post Office workers extra money, but the rise in the amount the Government wants to take out of the profits. The increase in the Government's take may just cover the 26 per cent pay rise they have awarded themselves.
