WHILE Britain's best athletes are going for gold in Atlanta, an equally tough challenge is being undertaken by transplant sportsmen and women.

The Guardian Health British Transplant Games are under way in Cardiff and among the competitors will be George Connor, from Bacup, and Gareth Pollard, from Burnley.

Like the Olympics, gold, silver and bronze medals are up for grabs and more than 800 transplant patients will be competing.

Sports range from squash, badminton and tennis to a mini-marathon, swimming, cycling and track and field athletics.

George, 59, received a liver transplant two years' ago at St James' Hospital, Leeds, and will be competing in the men's veteran tennis singles.

Gareth Pollard, 23, received a kidney transplant five years' ago in Manchester Royal Infirmary and will be competing in the men's breaststroke. The games, sponsored by Guardian Health, will be on until Sunday.
