BRITAIN should act as the honest broker to solve the internal conflict in Kashmir, according to Pendle MP Gordon Prentice.
And, he says, an incoming Labour government would make finding a resolution to the troubles a priority.
He told a packed meeting in Nelson organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Welfare Association the crisis demanded urgent action.
Mr Prentice said the British Government, because of the UK's historic ties with India and Pakistan, was well placed to broker a settlement.
"The government convened two conferences in London in an attempt to resolve the Bosnia conflict. We should do the same with Kashmir.
"Kashmiris want the right to self determination. I firmly believe there should be a plebiscite in that troubled land to allow the people to decide their own form of Government and their own future.
A system imposed by India has not worked and clearly never will."
