MUSIC-MAD Mark Wolfe caused a stir when he went back to get his guitar as firemen tried to rescue him from a first floor window.

Mr Wolfe, 37, was standing on the ledge of the window of his flat in Manchester Road, Nelson, when the fire brigade arrived.

They had been called from a mobile phone by a passing motorist who spotted smoke.

Said sub officer Andy Taylor: "We got there just as the police arrived. There was lots of smoke coming from the flat and when we went round the back we saw a man standing on the window ledge about 20ft up.

"We persuaded him to stay where he was while we got a ladder, but when we got up there he had disappeared back inside for his guitar.

"When he came out he was a bit woozy because of the smoke but he was OK and we managed to shepherd him down the ladder."

Once on the ground, Mr Wolfe was given oxygen to help him recover while firefighters went into the flat to tackle the blaze.

Most of the damage was confined to the bathroom and an upstairs hall.

Added Mr Taylor: "There's no doubt, he was very lucky someone raised the alarm."
