THE hero of many a battle of the Roses is bowling over the county boundary.

Cricket legend fiery Fred Trueman has joined the fight to have the former Lancashire and Yorkshire boundary put back in its original place, and is lending his support to the campaign being waged by Unite Craven.

He will did his bit to hit the current boundary for six today when he unveiled an unofficial 'Yorkshire Welcomes You' sign which has been installed in a field next to the A56 between Foulridge and Kelbrook.

The true Yorkshire tyke's appearance co-incides with the celebration of Yorkshire Day and is the latest in Unite Craven's long struggle to return Barnoldswick, Earby, and the villages of Salterforth and Kelbrook back into the White Rose County. West Craven became part of Lancashire in 1974.

White roses have frequently been added to official road signs around Pendle to tell motorists about the area's Yorkshire allegiance.

There has now been an unofficial Yorkshire boundary sign near Great Hague Farm for several years, and earlier this year a comparable sign, welcoming people to Lancashire, went up on the opposite side of the road.
