SUPER scooter Matheu Parry has set off on his 800-mile plus charity ride with a difference from John O'Groats to Land's End.

But before the Brierfield fund-raiser set off on the marathon scooter push he visited a local supermarket to pick up a few things.

Matheu, 23, of Taylor Street, has been backed by supermarket chain Food Giant in his bid to gather cash for the charity Shelter and to get his name in the record books.

Before he set off from the northernmost tip of the country he visited the store in Nelson to collect three trollies full of goods to help him on his way.

Store manager Ken Thomas said: "I heard about Matheu's sponsored scooter push and we decided to help him. Because of the route he's taking, which is down the western side of the country, he's only passing three of our stores, but as he goes passed he will be picking up food for himself and his back-up team to keep them going. "We gave him a helping hand to start off his journey because of his local connections and because Food Giant tries to put as much into helping the local community as possible."

If all goes well Matheu is due back in Nelson around the middle of the month and he is expected to be given a civic welcome by the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Frank Clifford.
