AS POSTAL services ground to a halt in East Lancashire today Royal Mail bosses urged union bosses to let workers vote on a settlement package.
Despite the Government announcement of a one month suspension of the monopoly no local companies appeared to be going elsewhere.
East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce secretary Valerie Miles said: "We have not been approached by any people asking to be put in touch with private delivery companies."
Royal Mail North West director and general manager Ken Barker urged the Communication Workers Union to ballot members.
He added: "The one-month suspension is a sad day for the Post Office."
A skeleton emergency service was operating today with Royal Mail collecting mail from post office counters and post boxes at post offices with one collection no later than 3pm.
A callers office was set up at Blackburn Delivery Office until 6pm to accept mail
