THE fate of Leigh's Wesley Guild field will be decided at the end of October.
Wesley Guild Preservation Group organiser Stephen Sargent met Wigan Metro representatives at Wigan Town Hall to set a date for the hearing to decide on whether the Beech Walk field should be given village green status.
Campaigners, who want to preserve the Council-owned field which is earmarked for housing, admitted they were surprised and saddened to learn Leigh RUFC had withdrawn its own application to register the field as a village green.
A spokesman for the Group said:"The survival of the Wesley Guild as a recreation area now rests solely on the shoulders of the Preservation Group. We are now more determined than ever to take the fight with Wigan Council to a successful conclusion.
"Although hundreds of people have come forward with information as to their use of the field the group is anxious to hear from anyone who can help the campaign."
