GOLBORNE strengthened their grip at the top of the Bolton Association as the weather washed away Clifton's challenge.

While Golborne were picking up their expected derby win over Astley & Tyldesley, their title rivals were left frustrated as the rain prevented them from bowling a ball against Standish.

That leaves Golborne with a massive 20-point lead at the top after they restricted A & T to a modest 97-9 in 48 overs.

Once again Ewan McCray dictated the pattern of the game with 4-34 off 24 overs before pro Tony Kelly led the victory charge with an unbeaten 59 to seal the points in 30 overs.

Atherton were the Association's only other winners - a seven-wicket success over Adlington.

Paul Killey top scored with 75 in Adlington's 185-7, but Atherton responded with a partnership of 150 from Andy Hall and Brian Cole.

Hall was bowled by Ian Curme two short of a century while Cole's contribution was a solid 57 in a result that should ensure Atherton a top four place at the end of the season.

The weather intervened elsewhere with Mike Davies hitting 65 for Edgworth at Blackrod, Robin Faulkener 48 in Walshaw's draw at Spring View and John Hopkins 54 in 28 balls for Daisy Hill at Elton.
