WHEN Sir Hugh Greene was appointed Director General of the BBC in 1960 he said: "I found it rather stuffy, so I decided to open the windows to let in some air."
During his term of office, new exciting controversial programmes like Z Cars, Till Death Us Do Part, That Was The Week That Was, Steptoe and Son, and the Wednesday Play appeared.
During the 1960s, television in general was exciting, imaginative and fresh.
In the 1990s, it is dull unimaginative and stale.
Little wonder audiences are in decline. It badly needs another Sir High Greene to open some more windows to blow away the cobwebs which now engulf the media.
