A CHEQUE for more than £1 million of lottery cash was handed over as work began on the long-awaited sports hall and learner section extension at West Craven pool began.
Councillors, leisure staff and other guests gathered at the Barnoldswick pool.
David Heddon, regional director of the North West Sport Council, handed £1,012,100 to Coun Margaret Bell, chairman of Pendle Council's West Craven committee, to help pay for the extension.
A further £15,000 was donated by local people through a fund-raising campaign, and Pendle Council chipped in with £459,975.
Cash come from several other sources, including £30,000 from West Craven High School.
Coun Jo Belbin told the guests: "We've all been looking forward to this day for a long time.
"It is a tremendous achievement for the people of Barnoldswick and West Craven who campaigned for this money."
