D PEARSON (Letters, August 31) is probably correct in stating that Catholics were wary of becoming members of the police in Northern Ireland because of their fear of the IRA.
However, he avoids the question of why so many are refused employment in other fields.
I'm afraid the same may apply to John Major because of intimidation from those whose support he so desperately needs, and that is why, as so many have stated, he has become so ineffective.
