ACTIVISTS for Central Park in Morecambe expressed relief this week after a motion threatening the future of their campaign was defeated. The move by a splinter group of councillors to salvage part of the meadow earmarked for housing and incorporate it into the park was defeated at a emergency full council meeting last Wednesday. The motion was defeated by 33 votes to 24 and prompted leader of the motion Cllr Carol Broad to abandon the Altham Road Meadow saga altogether.
Cllr Geraldine Smith, a driving force behind the new park, wants to see the Council leader Stanley Henig is baffled by rumours that a group has made a bid to the Millennium Commission for funds to purchase the site. In a statement he claimed: "Nobody knows if such a group even exists never mind who is involved with it or what its intentions are.
"This council is open and run democratically. People would be angry if the council acted in the same furtive manner as this group is reported to have done."
