AT frequent intervals, the Government and environmental groups make a plea to car owners to forsake their vehicles and return to using public transport. Alas to no avail.
The fact is the motor car is now as much a part of modern life as television sets, videos, washing machines, indoor toilets, bathrooms, superstores and foreign holidays.
One might as well make a plea for people to return to using wind-up gramophones, dolly-tubs, outside toilets, tin baths, gas lamps and holidays spent hop-picking.
By the way, I am not a car owner.
