YOUNG people who watched the TV documentary programme 'Bomber Command: Reaping the Whirlwind' on September 10, could be forgiven for thinking that the only British city which was bombed in the Second World War was London.
No other city of ours was mentioned, and this gives a distorted picture.
The truth is that the German Air Command ordered a blitz against most major cities, even though they were not military targets. These were civilian targets. My home town, Liverpool, was subjected to nightly bombing and the picture of the devastation remains with me to this day.
What happened to Liverpool happened to most of the major cities in Britain. All sides carried out systematic bombing of cities. Are we beginning to forget the truth so soon?
