HELPING a firm increase its weekly orders by £1,700 helped convince judges that student Alison Holme is the best in the North West.

Alison, 20, won the regional final of the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme for her work with Dale Polymers of Accrington.

Under the scheme, which places undergraduates on summer work placements with firms, Alison carried out a market survey to help the firm meet customer needs more effectively.

The predicted increase in turnover at the rubber goods firm as a result of her work is £200,000.

Alison, from Nelson, is currently studying marketing and law at De Montford University in Leicester. She travelled to the Connaught Rooms, London, to receive her award from Richard Page, minister for small businesses.

Alison will now go through to the national final to compete for the title of the UK's Most Enterprising Student.

The STEP scheme, which is managed locally by the Pendle Enterprise Trust, aims to help firms take advantage of new ideas and technical knowledge of students.

It also gives undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience.
