NEW playing fields to replace ones sold for housing development are zoned for reclaimed land off Astley Street, Tyldesley.
Wigan Council is entering into an agreement with Peel Investments to secure a 25 year lease on six acres of land west of Astley Street and south of the old railway embankment.
Speaking on behalf of colleagues Cllrs Stephen Hellier and Alan Stephenson, Cllr Brian Wilson complimented officers for the successful negotiations saying:"I am sure this will be welcomed by the local community, especially sporting organisations."
Locals had vigorously opposed the sale of the land which for years was earmarked for a new Church of England primary school.
A spokesman for the borough land and property department estimated it would take two years to prepare the site which is big enough for two football pitches.
The exact siting has yet to be determined but will be close to Astley Street on part of the Higher Fold-Gin Pit reclamation land formerly owned by Greater Manchester Council.
Cllr Wilson is also urging developers to provide public open space in Ennerdale Road.
He said:"It would complete development proposals approved by Tyldesley UDC and Lancashire CC over 30 years ago.
"It is a shame a whole generation has not had the opportunity of a landscaped open space. I am sure as completion nears reality the facilities will be appreciated by local residents."
