A GIRLS' football team from Preston won a mini World Cup in London - and became famous for the day in the process!
Lea Town Girls Under-13 team not only beat Germany in the final of the Puma Street 5-a-side World Soccer Tournament, they also met Diego Maradonna, were interviewed on radio and appeared on breakfast TV.
Assistant Manager of the team Martin Gaughan said: "They were celebrities for the day. It was just unbelievable.
"My wife Bernadette is the manager of the team and she is over the moon," he added.
They were England's sole representatives at the tournament in Battersea Park, and also beat Austria and the Republic of Ireland en route to the cup.
Mr Gaughan said: "The whole thing was just very well run and there was a great atmosphere. Everyone really enjoyed themselves."
The team was set up less than six months ago by Mrs Gaughan after her football-mad daughter Siobhan announced she would like to be in a team.
Puma paid all of the costs for teams involved and for Lea Town this included train fares, accommodation at Kings College Campus, a sight seeing tour of London, a visit to Wembley and admission to watch a premiership match..
Normally the team - who train on Ashton Park - wear BNFL sponsored kits but for the tournament the team were kitted out in Puma strips, tracksuits and trainers which they were allowed to keep.
They picked up a large cup for the team and each player received a smaller version to keep.
