POLICE are hoping to put the brakes on speeding motorists in a new life-saving campaign.
During the Department of Transport's Kill Your Speed initiative, traffic police will be cracking down on drivers who break the speed limit.
Almost 11 per cent of accidents in Lancashire this year have involved speeding motorists.
Accident prevention officer Peter Stas said: "This force will vigorously enforce speed limits in an effort to reduce casualties and improve road safety.
"I have no sympathy for drivers who are reported for speeding."
He added: "Statistics show that speed is a contributory factor in a significant proportion of accidents.
"Between January and August this year there were 3,934 accidents in Lancashire. Speeding was involved in some 432 of these and 16 were fatal."
Mr Stas said that although drinking and driving had become socially unacceptable, many people still believe themselves to be "unlucky" to be stopped for speeding.
"It is not a game," he added. "Please drive safely and considerately for everyone's sake."
