OLYMPIC canoeist Paul Ratcliffe reckons the road to Sydney 2000 could begin in Wigan.
And the Tyldesley star, currently taking part in the World Cup Final Canoe Comp in Brazil, is urging local youngsters to 'have a go."
The Red Rose Forest Fun Triathlon will be held in Wigan's Haigh Country Park on October 6 - with canoeing one of the three sports featured.
Paul believes future British stars could emerge from the event.
After all, much of his early training was on the Leeds-LIverpool Canal, where the Red Rose canoe event will be staged.
"I hope people will have a go," said Paul, disappointingly out of the medals at the Atlanta Olympics. "Canoeing is challenging and exciting and anyone can take part and develop skills.
"For many people who have never tried the sport it could be the start of a new, enjoyable and absorbing interest.
"I look back with great pleasure on the number of hours I have spent canoeing on the canal and the number of friends I made in the process."
Apart from canoeing, cycling and orienteering will be featured - all part of the Red Rose Forest series of 'Forest Focus Adventure' events.
Morning activities will be devoted to teams and individuals, the afternoon to families. Details on 0161-872-1660.
All equipment will be provided and the entry fee is £1 per event.
