HEART surgeon Dr Keith Ramstead, who worked at Whiston Hospital between August 1993 and March 1995, has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of three patients in New Zealand.

The 44-year-old is charged with the deaths of three patients he operated on in Christchurch in 1991 and 1992, and of falsifying their death certificates.

He was extradited from his home in Windermere Avenue, Moss Bank, following a 30-month legal battle.

The charges allege he caused the deaths, by failing to use reasonable knowledge and skill and care in surgical treatment.

Dr Ramstead, who is married to Margaret and has four children, worked at Whiston Hospital between August 1993 until March last year when he was dismissed.

He then went on to work at Broadgreen Hospital's emergency unit as a locum junior doctor.

Dr Ramstead spent seven years as a surgeon at Guy's Hospital, London, as well as some time at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, before he emigrated to New Zealand.
