BARNOLDSWICK'S historic town hall looks set to be closed as a district office of Pendle council when plans for a one-stop council shop are implemented.
The borough's ruling Liberal group want to open a centre where key services can be brought together under one roof - but they say the town hall is not a suitable venue.
New premises will have to be found - and the hall could be handed over to the town council for local use. People will have to use the new centre for paying bills and finding about borough council matters.
Leading councillors say the idea is an exciting way of helping people make best use of services. The one-stop shop will give tourist information and sell tickets and local goods as well as providing information on council issues and offering facilities for paying council tax and rents.
Council leader Alan Davies said: "This is a marvellous opportunity to return this historic building to the people of Barnoldswick, to become a real focal point for town council activity.
"This is another aspect of working in partnership to provide the best deal for local people. Pendle council is determined to provide a first-class one-stop service for Barnoldswick people."
Colin Pollard, chairman of Barnoldswick Town Council, said: "The town council appreciates the opportunity to give our views on this exciting new move and to contribute to the planning process."
