THE end of an era arrives tomorrow when a century old union representing hundreds of East Lancashire footwear workers closes.
The 1,300 members of the Rossendale Union of Boot, Shoe and Slipper Operatives voted overwhelmingly to transfer to the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trades.
"In some ways it is sad that a union with such a history should go but joining KFAT will strengthen our position in many respects," said Mike Murray, secretary of the RUBSSO. The Rossendale membership will form a new district within KFAT headed up by Mr Murray.
"We are very pleased to welcome members from the union into ours," said Helen McGrath, KFAT general president.
"This transfer will improve our negotiating position in the industry and strengthen the choice of footwear workers in this country."
Mr Murray started working life as a toolmaker, serving his apprenticeship and then becoming active in the Engineering Union and Burnley Labour Party. He joined RUBSSO thirty years ago and became general secretary in 1983. In 1995 he was awarded the MBE for his services.
