POLICE in Lancaster and Morecambe are calling on motorists to cut their speed at the launch of a national campaign - and promising strict measures to make sure it happens. More than 10 per cent of injury accidents across Lancashire this year have involved speeding motorists and that figure is just too high say Department of Transport chiefs. They launched a 'Kill Your Speed' campaign on Tuesday, urging drivers to stay within the speed limit to cut down the number of accidents on our roads.
Lancashire Police's accident prevention officer Peter Stas explained: "Statistics show that speed is a contributory factor in a significant proportion of accidents.
"Between January and August this year, there were 3,934 injury accidents in the county. Speeding was involved in some 432 of these and 16 were fatal accidents.
"I must stress the importance of driving at the right speed for the existing road and weather conditions."
Mr Stas said that many drivers still consider themselves to be 'unlucky' to be stopped for speeding and maintained that people must accept responsibility for their actions and drive safely. He added: "I have no sympathy for drivers who are reported for speeding. This police force will vigorously enforce speed limits in an effort to reduce casualties and improve road safety.
"It is not a game so don't pay the penalty. Please drive safely and considerately for everyone's sake."
