A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to create a taxi rank in Nelson bus station is still being given the red light by planning officers, despite a concerted campaign by cab operators.
A report to Pendle Council's Nelson area committee, which meets on Monday, recommends the move to create two spaces for taxis in the busy station be refused.
The proposed rank would be at the 'top' end of the bus station, near to the police station.
But the planning officer's report argues: "Pedestrians are continually crossing the bus station driving areas in random fashion and I am greatly concerned that the introduction of cars into the bus station will jeopardise pedestrian safety.
"The use of the bus station by buses is on the increase and the introduction of hackneys into the bus station will interfere with its operational efficiency."
But taxi operators said the scheme was backed by local people and have handed in an 800-name petition supporting the move.
