BRAVE Doreen Shah has been injecting herself daily for 50 years. She is one of only a handful of diabetes sufferers to receive the Alan Nabarro Medal from the British Diabetic Association.
The medal, given in honour of the first man in Britain ever to receive insulin, is only given to diabetics who have been taking insulin for more than 50 years. Diabetes specialist consultant physician Dr Geraint Jones was delighted to present Doreen with the medal at a ceremony at Larkhill Health Centre, Blackburn.
He said: "She has been a wonderful patient and is an example to younger diabetes sufferers of what can be achieved. She is a mother of three and is proof that the illness need not hold anyone back."
